Here’s How The Golden Circle Inspired Me to Reflect On My “Why”
By Chris Yee | Uncategorized | Nov 22
I recently read a thought-provoking book titled “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek. He has a great quote from the book: “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.”
Those are just 21 words and 18 are monosyllabic so thankfully, I didn’t find it too difficult to read. But I’ve been thinking about these 21 words for several weeks.
I was part of a panel interview with a candidate here in the Houston area yesterday, and I asked what her why was. Her whole demeanor changed as she told us what drives her and what gives her life purpose, meaning, and passion. Just talking about her why energized her and made her more animated. The other panel interviewers saw her energy as well. It was pretty cool to see.
As a business owner, I’m sometimes asked “why are you in business?” That’s a great question and it goes straight to the heart of what Sinek calls The Golden Circle.
I answer this question by saying I want my company to be the recruiting and staffing firm that I never encountered when I was working in the chemical industry.
I want people and companies to know (a) we care; (b) we have a process, and (c) we work hard to serve others.
So….do you know your why? And can you say it in 21 words or less?
